January tends to be the coldest and quietest month at the allotment with sharp frosts and snow - good for killing pests and sterilizing the ground.

Force chicory and rhubarb

Plant fruit trees and soft fruit

Winter prune apples and pears, blackberries blackcurrants redcurrants and whitecurrants and gooseberries.

Continue digging and making new beds (if the weather permits), adding manure or compost as needed

Sow overwintering green manures

Hoe out winter weeds such as chickweed

Keep an eye on vulnerable trees and shrubs

Clean out greenhouse and coldframes ready for spring

Clean and mend tools and machinery

General tidy-up of plot

Order seeds and make plans for the year
